Susie Kim

Susie Kim is the owner of Ardmore Seafood John Yi Fish Market. Before coming to the United States from Seoul, South Korea, she had no experience with seafood. She was previously a piano teacher, and soon realized she was not going to be able to be successful in the United States if she continued teaching. She purchased her seafood business from a seller in Reading Terminal Market, which is the John Yi Fish Market. Despite her lack of seafood market experience, and also not knowing much English, she now is very successful in growing her seafood business, and owns John Yi Fish Market, Ardmore Seafood, and recently opened Umi Seafood and Sushi in Reading Terminal Market, with Chef Yong Kim. She sells 120 types of fish at the John Yi Fish Market. She also provides an array of services, such as cooking lobster for customers, cleaning shrimp, and sells prepared seafood. She notes that for over 30 years that she’s been working for the market, she’s noticed a shift from whole fish to fillets. She also says her fish used to be almost all domestically harvested, while now 30% of her fish is imported. People have also shifted their fish preferences, where whiting, golgi, and cod used to be the most popular, and now salmon, red snappers, and tuna are most popular. She thinks health reasons could be why there has been more of a push for these fish. People have more of an interest in white fish, and she says lobster and crab are more popular now too. Her favorite fish is a white thin fish, and she likes to pan fry them with salt and pepper. She truly believes in the motto of her sign for the John Yi Fish Market, “Eat fish live longer”.
